In Memory of Airel Gariano
For My Twin
Archival Color Print
2013

Hair is a big issue for young girls as a symbol of a sort of freedom that they get to explore and play with. This notion of hair equating normalcy is exactly why Elora is having her head shaved. When her twin sister Ariel’s cancer came back, Ariel was worried and fraught with anger about her new main of blonde hair falling out yet again due to chemotherapy. Having a twin, Ariel knows exactly what she should look like, what her hair should grow like, and what her face should look like.
